The American Boychoir
Currently celebrating its seventieth anniversary season, The American Boychoir is regarded as the United States’ premier concert boys’ choir and one of the finest boychoirs in the world. It continues to dazzle audiences with its unique blend of musical sophistication, effervescent spirit and ensemble virtuosity. Its members - boys from grades 4 through 8, reflecting the ethnic, religious and cultural diversity of our nation - come from nine states and four foreign countries to pursue a rigorous musical and academic curriculum at The American Boychoir School, the only non-sectarian boys’ choir school in the nation. Founded in Columbus, Ohio, in 1937, The American Boychoir has been located in Princeton, New Jersey, since 1950. In addition to maintaining an active national and international touring schedule, the ensemble performs and records regularly with such world-class artists and ensembles as the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, soprano Jessye Norman, pop diva Beyoncé, jazz vocalist and conductor Bobby McFerrin and Sir Paul McCartney.
It has been extensively recorded and broadcast on radio and television, with some forty-five commercial recordings to its name. During the past year, it has achieved Gold Record status for recordings it made with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Michael W. Smith. A new CD entitled Harmony: American Songs of Faith, the seventh to be produced for its own label, Albemarle Records, was released in October, 2007.
During the 2007-08 season, The American Boychoir will be performing over 120 concerts in fourteen states stretching from Massachusetts to Florida. The 70th Anniversary season includes 4 performances of J.S. Bach's The Passion According to St. Matthew in March 2008 with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Kurt Masur. The American Boychoir will join the Philadelphia Orchestra in 3 performances of Leonard Bernstein's Kaddish Symphony, and 5 performances of Mahler's Symphony No. 8 under the musical direction of Maetro Christoph Eschenbach during April and May 2008. The tour season culminates with an international tour to the Czech Republic as a featured ensemble during the 2nd International Boys and Men's Choral Festival in June 2008.
THE RESIDENT TRAINING CHOIR
The Resident Training Choir, under the leadership of Nathan A. Wadley, Resident Training Choir Director, is one of two performing choirs at The American Boychoir School in Princeton, New Jersey.
The boys that comprise The Resident Training Choir are first year students and represent several states in the U.S. as well as the countries of South Korea and Taiwan. The Resident Training Choir performs in concerts, school assemblies, at corporate events and church services throughout the Northeast.
Each December, The Resident Training Choir joins The American Boychoir Concert Choir for the immensely popular annual holiday concert in Princeton, New Jersey. They have also joined the Concert Choir in several prestigious performances including Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem; the “Millennium Project”, a Disney commissioned work with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Kurt Masur; and most recently, the 77th Annual Academy Awards Ceremony with pop diva Beyoncé Knowles, televised internationally on ABC. In the spring of 2008, the combined choirs will perform Kaddish by Leonard Bernstein and Mahler’s Symphony 8, both with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra.
Every spring, The Resident Training Choir embarks upon a mini-tour in preparation for becoming members of the touring choir of The American Boychoir.
