Residential Life
Daily Life
Life at ABS is full of rewarding challenges, one of which is learning the skills of time management in a busy environment. The boys start a typical weekday with breakfast at 7:25. Their classes begin at 8:00 and continue until 12:35, lunchtime. Afterwards, at 1:30, the boys start a rotation schedule consisting of Written and Aural Theory, Voice Technique, and Physical Education. Following the rotation schedule the boys start their afternoon rehearsals and continue, with a one-hour rest period in between, until 6:45. At that time the boarding boys have dinner and the boys that come for the day are picked up. Following dinner there is free time when boys can practice other instruments, take lessons, or participate in a club (chess/board games, Drama, technology, puzzle society, 8th grade club, and bible study). At 8:30 boys may call family and friends, read, play games, watch educational television, talk with each other, and prepare for bed. By 9:30 all the boys are in their beds and the lights are off for the night.
Dorm Life
Most boys agree that much of their education occurs through living in the dormitory. The boys learn listening skills, how to articulate their thoughts, and how to handle conflicts peacefully.
The Residential Staff consists of the Head of School, Dean of Students, and a team of Houseparents (residential and non-residential). These dedicated individuals are certified in First Aid and CPR, and receive training from a psychologist on child awareness and instilling appropriate boundaries with children.
There are two dormitories at ABS. The Cottage is for the younger boys, and has two houseparent apartments, a room for 8th grade Prefects and six rooms for the boys. Ettl dormitory has two houseparent apartments, a room for the Headboys of the school, and fourteen rooms for boys.
During the year there are many weekend activities, such as this Halloween outing.
Intramural Sports
The school offers some intramural sporting activity in which most boys participate. These include: soccer, basketball, cross-country, tennis, flag football, and ultimate frisbee.
Boy Scouts
Our Boy Scout troop meets every Friday following rehearsals. The troop has an annual ski trip in January and a weekend camping trip at a historical site in the spring.
