Health Curriculum Overview
The health curriculum at The American Boychoir School follows the National Health Education Standards. By following these standards, students will, by the eighth grade be able to:
- Comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention
- Demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family and community health
- Demonstrate the ability to practice health enhancing behavior and reduce risk
- Demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication
- Analyze the influence of culture, media, technology, and other internal and external factors on health
- Demonstrate the ability to access valid health information, products and services
- Demonstrate the ability to use goal setting and decision making skills to enhance health
Objectives of the program will allow students to understand wellness as a way of life, understand health risks in use of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco; understand concepts of movement and fitness; and understand concepts of family life and sexuality.
Lower School (4th and 5th Grades)
Objective
- The objective of the health curriculum in the Lower School is to establish a foundation for health and wellness, including personal and environmental safety (4th grade) and puberty (5th grade).

Sixth Grade
Objective
- The objective of the health curriculum in the 6th grade is to continue to establish a foundation for health and wellness, including puberty.

- Adolescence and puberty
Seventh Grade
Objective
- The objective of the health curriculum in the 7th grade is to continue to establish a foundation for health and wellness, including discussion of alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
Content
- Health risks and behavior
- Teens and tobacco addiction
- Using medication safely
- Alcohol use and abuse
- Drug abuse
Eighth Grade
Objective
- The objective of the health curriculum in the 8th grade is to continue to establish a foundation for health and wellness, including discussion of male and female reproductive systems, HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, developing healthy relationships, abstinence, and importance of personal values.
