The American Boychoir has extensive first-hand experience in the recording industry as a performing artist. The Choir has been either the sole or featured artist on over fifty recordings since 1947 and has recorded for such diverse labels as RCA, Decca, Smithsonian Collection, Pro Arte Digital, SONY Classical, and Virgin Classics, as well as a number of smaller independent labels such as LINN. It has been signed as an exclusive classical artist by major recording companies, has been used as a guest artist on other performers projects, and has worked as a musical artist in television and the film industry.
In working at a more intimate level with smaller independent labels, The American Boychoir realized it had both the knowledge and ability to make and release its own recordings. The Boychoir is experienced in recording, production, and marketing. Albemarle Records was established in the fall of 2002 as the independent production and distribution vehicle for recordings created by The American Boychoir. It was launched to generate earned income for The American Boychoir and to broaden the Choirs artistic mission by using and expanding already established markets and taking advantage of new business models evolving from rapid changes in technology.
Albemarle Records gives The American Boychoir the flexibility not only to build on the core repertoire of the great European tradition, but also to nourish and develop that tradition so that it speaks to our time. It has greater artistic freedom, both in repertoire and artistic collaborations. And, it can balance the creation of more adventuresome recordings with those that sell to a broader audience as part of its long-range strategy.
